computer wont recognise HDD or CD Rom

My Computer a DELL P4 1.8 will not recognise the HDD or CD ROM Drive. When I go into BIOS it will not detect and gives the message NOT INSTALLED. It recognises the FDD

some history would help - presumably it did recognise these devices - so what happened?

Have you checked the cabling?

Are they on same IDE connector or on separate ones?

If both drives are on the same IDE channel make sure that one is a master and one is a slave, if they are set the same niether will be recognized.
