Hi, guru's.

My computer was stolen this weekend and I wanted to know if I could deactivate XP pro from the stolen computer and reactivate it on a new computer that I'm putting together so the stolen computer's copy will (hopefully) stop working. Is this wishful thinking or can I even deactivate it since it's still on the other computer?

I would speak to Microsoft via one of their Activation experts contactable via the general support telephone number.
Microsoft have the ability to invalidate and block Product Keys that are pirated versions, which is sort of similar to your unfortunate circumstances. Perhaps the Police Dept. can trace the machine with the assistance of Microsoft too?

Question is whether the thieves wanted to steal

1) the hardware
2) the hardware and the software
3) the data
4) just for kicks

You never know why people steal things. Either way, when you try to reinstall, it will say that that version has already been activated. All you need to do is ring MS and they will give you a new code.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

There is no important data on my computer ie - passwords, account #'s so it would have been for kicks. Once again thanks for the info!!
