I am running windows xp pro with SP1 installed on a pen 4 2 ghz with 512mb of pc2700 ddrram, radeon 9800 pro and 2 80 gig hard drives. When i open up 1,2,3,... applications and minimize them or open up something else while it is running my computer slows down alot. I've tried everthing from bootvis, to tweak xp-pro to customizer xp and going to blkviper and cutting off all unneed services by using services.msc. After closing 3d games sometime i experience this slowdown. I am very pissed off because so far i haven found the solution to my problems. Any help i would greatly appreaciate as i am using my computer often.

It might be something like this.

815411 - Heap Algorithm Update for Atypically Large Heap Requests

Any clues in your Event Viewer?

Are you fully updated from Windows Updates.

Have you tried temporarily disabling any Virus protection and seeing how it runs.

Computer Speed and Performance May Decrease (Q310419)

HOW TO: Set Performance Options (Q308417)

Spybot

Ad-aware

The last two will check your computer for spyware and adware.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

I did the unsigned verification of drivers just now and i have 2,081 that havent been digitally signed. do i have to follow the instruction on the microsoft website or is there an app that will allow me to verify them all at once?

" did the unsigned verification of drivers just now and i have 2,081 that havent been digitally signed"

Tell me you made that number up.

Run the sigverif from the Start Run box (again) but don't have it check every file in C/Windows or you will get funny results as it checks every type of file including text files etc.

Verify Unsigned Device Drivers.

Click Start, click Run, type sigverif, and then click OK.
Click Advanced.
Click Look for other files that are not digitally signed.
In the Look in this folder box, type x:\Windows\system32\drivers, where x is the letter of the drive where Windows XP is installed.
On the Logging tab, make sure the Save the file signature verification results to a log file check box is selected, and then click OK.
Click Start.

NOTE: The log file is named Sigverif.txt, and it is saved in the Windows folder. Third-party drivers that are unsigned are displayed as "Not signed." Use the drivers in this list as your troubleshooting starting point.

It may be an idea to check your RAM too.

I did what u told me to linney and now the number is reduced to 209 files that arent digitally signed but i was wondering if i could verify them all at once?

Something is definitely wrong somewhere. Windows is saying that none of your drivers are digitally signed. You wouldn't have much more than 200 drivers in there. What does the log say? It should say something similar to this with a list following after indicating signed or not signed drivers.

"i was wondering if i could verify them all at once?" The tool you are using (sigverif) is verifying what drivers are signed or not signed. Only Microsoft can digitally sign a driver after testing it (not you or anybody else).

Try the RAM test to see if you computer's hardware is functioning as it should. At most you should only have a few unsigned driver's, your numbers are ridiculous indicating something quite wrong somewhere.

heres what my log looks like

If you experience any of the following behaviors, you may need to re-register Softpub.dll:

- Windows Update always reports Software Update Incomplete.

- The System Information Tool shows that none of your devices have signed drivers.

- You cannot connect to secure Web sites. You receive The page cannot be displayed.

- When you install programs or drivers that uses digital signatures, the Setupapi.log contains:

FileName will be installed (policy=ignore).
Error 0x800b0003: The form specified for the subject is not one supported or known by the specified trust provider.

- If you reinstall Internet Explorer 6, you receive a message that Internet Explorer is not digitally signed.

- MSN Explorer may time out when retrieving e-mail.

- The Notes box of the Sound and Display tabs of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool reports that The file <FileName> is not digitally signed.

- Service Pack 1 Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf.

- When you try to activate the Digital Media Edition of Microsoft Plus!, you cannot.

To re-register Softpub.dll:

1. Open a CMD.exe prompt.

2. Type: regsvr32 softpub.dll and press Enter.

3. Press OK to acknowledge that DllRegisterServer in Softpub.dll succeeded.

i did what it said and the 209 unsigned drivers that i had before didnt change... can this affect system preformance dramatically even though all my systems drivers are up to date and should be verified wtf is going on with microsoft and signed drivers when i get the drivers from the hardwares website, such as, (for radeon 9800 pro drivers), (ICS mainboard drivers)....

To make it easier, copy and paste this as sign_fix.cmd
Then double click it to register all the dlls:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
regsvr32 Dssenh.dll
regsvr32 Rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 Sccbase.dll
regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll.

See if you can make a copy of C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers and run the Sigverif tool on another XP Machine on your copied drivers file.

As we may only be dealing with the symptoms of your problem and not the actual cause itself may I suggest you read again this whole post and let us know if any of the suggestions have been tried and what the results were.

I hope I am wrong (usually I am) but you may be heading toward a Reformat and Reinstall XP type solution. Bearing that in mind I hope your backups are in order.

I have a similar problem running XP. My computer is sluggish after burning audio cds using "disk copy" and after playing 3d games like Medal of Honor and Halo. The HDD churns awhile and the computer is slow as crap for a good while or till I reboot.

p4 2.4 Ghz 533 FSB
512 DDR333
Intel D865PERL MB
x2 40gig HDD
Radeon 7500 64meg AGP x4
WinXP Home all updates applied

Also did the same on old P3 1.2 Ghz setup. It almost acts like its "tired" after burning or running games.

really? because i sometimes have lag but i reduced the occurrence by reinstalling windows xp

Are these systems upgrades from 9x or clean XP installs?

Mine has been "clean" installs from the beginning. I erase/reload computer about every 5 months. Same result after each installation. I downloaded the patch described earlier, but cannot test it till I'm home (on vacation).

clean installations of windows xp pro and all drivers etc..
