When starting the Computer a message came up that a fatal error had occured. When rebooting the Computer only ran in safe mode.I've got Windows 98 installed.
Can anybody help me with this problem?

Peter,

Do you remember anything more about the fatal error.

What where you doing when this happened, have you installed anything new on the machine, software/hardware.

Have you tried pressing F3 on startup, and selecting the option where you can choose to run the config.sys, autoexec.bat and win.ini bit by bit, I forget the name for it, but I think it option 5 ot 6.

It may be thay you will need to reinstall windows 98 over the top, but that will be a last ditch effort.

This sort of error is sometimes down to the incorrect Video driver installed.

Hold down the CTRL key as the computer is booting.
Select "Normal" from the menu, see what happens.
If you get a "hang", get back to us, and we can propose a couple of solutions, otherwise it should be OK. Cheers,
Jim

What were you doing just before this issue ocoured ? Installing software ? (that would be my guess) remove that s/w and reboot...(Please tell me that you wern't messing with files and desided that their was no need for those silly little vdx's or dll files...(If you don't know what you're doing DON'T DO IT !) My brother desided to delete config.sys and autoexec.bat back in the dos days to save disk space (That was so funny "Hey it wont boot")

The best one is the user who deleted io.sys cos he didn't think it was required...

We had weeks of fun with that one!

I'm having a similar problem with one of the computers that I administer. Any helpful solutions would appreciated. The following is noted:
1. During a selected normal boot, system hangs.
2. During a logged boot, all logged entries are succesful.
3. during a step-by-step start-up, it hangs after the config.sys and autoexec.bat processes.

I have had a similair problem and found that the virus checking program that ran from the autoexec.bat was running and then causing w98 to freeze . I put rem in front of the line that was running the scan.exe and the win98 stopped freezing . I have not worked out why the scan program running would cause the win98 to freeze as the scan run through without freezing .
