I've been recording our greetings for the Auto Attendant through a computer microphone as a wave file then uploading them in Messenging. The audio sounds good thru the computer speakers but when it is played thru the Merlin there's noise and distortion. The recording of the greetings over the phone sound fine, but I'd prefer to use the computer to record and upload. I have tried various quality settings on the sound recording program, and not noticed any difference. Again it sounds wonderful when I replay it through my computer, so I know the initial input quality from my mike is OK. It just is not of good quality after I upload to the Messenger. Any ideas on how to improve the quality?(we're on Release 3).

I've done this without the quality issues, so it DOES work. How bout downloading one of the "good" .WAV files from the Messaging, then opening it with the same software that you use to record. Check the compression rate, the volume, and whether it is stereo or mono. That may give a clue as to how the Messaging "wants" the file. The files you are sending it may be "too nice."

To "upload" my file(s), when on my PC in the Merlin Messenger Release 3.0 Administration, all I do is to click the menu prompt sound icon to get to the "Merlin Messemger Audio and Recorder" window. Then I click on the import button and select the recorded WAV file from my PC running XP and then click OK. After I click OK, the computer displays a message "sending the recording to the Merlin messenging system" and the new recording is what I call uploaded.

On the "Merlin Messenger Audio and Recorder" window, I can record a message directly from there (not importing a wav file). After recording the message, I play it back (before clicking on OK to sent it to the merlin messenging system) and it sounds great, but after I click the OK button and it sends the new recording to the merlin messaging system and then click on the sound icon to play it again (retrieve the message from merlin) the message is of poor quaility - sounds like I have bucket over my head!).

So I get confused - when I playback my message before sending it to Merlin (uploading) it sounds great through my speakers; indicating that my mike and settings are OK. However, after uploading and listening on my speakers AND listening on the telephone the sound is poor. I suspect that Merlin is saving the file in a different format or as another person said a different compression rate(which I know little about).

In one of the help files, it appears that Merlin like PCM WAV with 6.10 8 KHz WAV. I don't know exactly what that means but I don't see that setting on my PC using the Sound Recorder program that is loaded on my XP Dell computer.

You will have to match the parameters the Messaging is using. Try opening a "good" Messaging file, thereby setting your recording program to the Messaging settings. Once opened, re-record the file yhe way you want it, then saving it. Saving it this way should set the file to what the Messaging system "wants."

Thank you Pepperz.

That seem to work much better, but the sound quality is not as good as recording over the telephone. I have a faily good mike, but I will try a better one. Your suggestion did greatly improve the quality, but I'm still not fully satisfied with my recording using the PC. I guess I may trying to be too perfect!

Remember, it's a phone, not a Bose.

My ideas revolved around Recording to the Computer and Sending to the MAIL with a PHONE Connection.

I could tell you how I do it, but I doubt my method would be better than what you are doing.
