Computer reboots before login screen

I'm having an issue with a user’s computer. The computer reboots just after the Windows 2000 Professional GUI appears to load and before the login screen would be displayed. This reboot, load, reboot process will continue all day long if left to do its thing.

The computer has service pack 4 installed as well as all critical Windows and Office XP updates. I have scanned the computer for viruses and found one. Sorry, I was unable to record what virus was found. The virus was able to be removed.

The computer will not boot normally but I am able to boot to safe mode, both normal and network enabled versions.

The only Event log that looks to be associated with this issue is the following one.

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Save Dump
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 8/17/2004
Time: 9:17:19 AM
User: N/A
Computer: ########
Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0xaf5a42f2, 0x00000000, 0x00000028). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini081704-07.dmp.

Since the computer will not boot normally I am unable to install the Windows Debug tools that would allow me to read the minidump log file that is mentioned in the system event log. This is because the Windows Installer service is not and will not start.

Does any one have an idea as to what this problem might be caused by? I do not receive any errors or blue screens. The computer simply reboots.

The following information is from the ntbtlog.txt file and is the last attempted normal boot of the computer.

Thank you for your time.

From the information you provided, it looks like some of your hardware drivers are failing during the boot. In many instances, this is due to an updated driver that has created a memory or IRQ conflict with the rest of the system. I've seen it happen often, especially when updating your drivers via Windows Update.

I would try the following:

* Boot into SAFE MODE
* Open up DEVICE MANAGER
* Remove all instances of a Display Adapter. (Say NO if asked to reboot).
* Shut down
* Start up normally

With luck, Windows will re-load the necessary drivers and work fine. If not, repeat the process, removing the Floppy Disk Controller and then the Hard Disk Contollers (these are the three that are not loading above). Hope this helps.
