This is an interesting one. If I login as the Domain Administrator the system works fine. If I login as a user with domain user rights or domain admin rights the system reboots right after login.

What has changed? Well, I installed Dragon Naturally Speaking 7.2 and plugged in a mic.

If that's the problem then why does it only happen with certain logins?

Enter Safe Mode as Administrator.

Start, Run, CMD

type:

regsvr32 regwizc.dll
regsvr32 licdll.dll
exit

Then logoff and restart the system normally.

Thanks for your response. Would you please explain what this does before I do it.

I believe that he is registering those two DLL files with Windows. This is not dangerous unless those DLL's are actually malicious (which is unlikely).

Well.... I followed those instructions then logged in as the user. The system rebooted.

Any other suggestions?

Boot XP in Safe Mode and then do two things:

1. Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Expand the Event View category and look through each of the 3 sub-categories for the red-flagged error records. These should match with the date and time of your reboots. Double click on the error records to see the details. Post the details back here, including especially the error
name and the STOP codes.

2, Open Control Panel - System - Advanced. In the Setup and Recovery panel (bottom) click on the Settings button and in the System Failure section of that window (middle) click on the Automatically Restart item to clear the checkmark.

This will likely Blue Screen the machine, but you need to see the error codes and message it shows.

Application Log:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206.

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

No errors in Security or System log.

The "Automatically Restart" checkbox was one of the first things I checked and it has been unchecked since I installed the O/S. I also change the RPC to "Restart the Service" on all systems.

You need to do a repair reinstallation of XP. When it is complete be certain to go back and reinstall Service Pack 1, and in batches of 4, the Hotfixes for the machine.

I have never seen a resolution of the Dcom plus Volume Shadow error without a reinstallation.

I'm not convinced I need to do a reinstall at this point. There is only an issue when logging in as a user. I'm able to log into "This system" as the domain administrator with no problems. I'll do more research on the event viewer errors before considering a reinstall.

Ok, I created a new user account and was able to log into it with no problems. It appears the issue is related to an account that was already on the PC when the issue occured.

While I'm researching this issue I'll have the user use this new account.

After she is done working this evening I'll remove all other accounts and allow the server to recreate an account on the PC. I'll then log on with her normal account and see if the system reboots again.

Corrupt profiles do strange things. Remember that you can copy the old user data to the new profile:
If there is an issue with the old profile, it would be in the Ntuser.dat that you will not copy to the new profile.

Thank you very much for your help bcastner. I will keep you informed of my progress.
