im trying to help fix my friends computer, but i dont even know where to start. All she tells me is that the computer is shutting down randomly. So she starts it back up, and it will run normally, but then it will shut back off in 5 minutes or so. Any suggestions?

sounds like a heat problem, check the fans, check event-viewer for errors

Several possibilities:

1) Overheating CPU or the temp threshold in the bios is set too low.

2) Bad Capacitors on the motherboard (bulging or leaking)

3) Failing power supply (again possibly a bad cap)

4) Loose or burnt power connector (main power plug/ trailing lead) or even the wall socket.

5) Driver or virus problem (but normally involves a restart rather than power off)

The event view is in administrative tools

Also set the PC to take a dump and not auto restart (in system properties)

Sorry - no time to write more - (mental note to self - write some FAQ's)

Hmm... i agree with paparazi. Is there a blue screen before the machine powers off? If so, it could possibly be a RAM issue... Just a thought. However, I like paparazi's idea of the power supply better...
