Hi,
recently my computer has had this bug. when opening applications, games and even windows the screen will just go black. this is random though, like, i will start the computer and after windows 2k loads it will go black, i then reset and keep doing that until its enters windows, rarely it wont do it at all. i have scanned using nortan, upgraded display drivers, bios, and directx. no change, i then completely formatted and it still does it... a few extra points.
+ when i upgraded the display driver, instead of a black screen when opening a game app it was a grey screen.
+ in the first screen where you press delete to enter bios, there are these werid lines of unfilled pixels, everytime i restart there is a different amount, its like white pixels in lines up the screen..

thanks in advance for any assistance..

Check the monitor on another PC, preferably running at a similar resolution (or higher), just to eliminate it from the equation. Try running your video card at a different resolution and see if this alters or resolves the problem. If you have the option I'd try changing the video card, as this may be the source of your problem.

Hi there,

the way you describe the display problems at startup sounds like you might have a problem with:

1. GFX card gone/going bad on you...

2. a PSU not supplying enough juice for all the components...

can't tell you more than that... need more info on your systems setup (CPU, GFX card, MoBo, BIOS vers, how many drives installed (HD and CDROMs) etc.)

first I would suspect the GFX card, make sure that it is seated correctly, unplug your PSU, take out your gfx card and reinsert it firmly... then reboot... if problems continue try another GFX card...

ok.. my specs are:
aopen ax4r plus motherbourd
p4 2.56 GHz
512mb DDR ram
128MB leadtek geforce 4 ti4200 AGP
20GB HD (boot)
40GB HD (files)
and a cdrom and burner

i will try pulling it apart and fitting it again anyway, and i thought it had to do with the video card, but an updated driver didnt help.. im pretty sure ur right about that, it cant be a software problem, if i formatted both HD and it still does it.. thanks

sorry.. i spoke too soon, its still doing the same thing..

If I were in your situation I woulds wap out the graphics card for any one at all if possible, just to see if it makes a difference. Then maybe swap the monitor if I could.

Is this a new system you have just built or a new one which has developed the problem?

Does it happen when the machine is idle?

Hi there,

like Grenage says... Swap out the GFX card with anotherone at hand (from say your old system, a friends system...) and see if it does the same...

check your PSU on what type it is and what wattage it has... see your system might not be able to get enough power to drive the G4 card and causing you these problems...

Ben

umm... what wattage should i be looking at?

hmm.. well ill try changing all the stuff as you guys said when i get time in the next few days

Just a thought on the issue have you tried changing the RAM i have noticed that faulty RAM can do some freaky stuff to the display

just a thought
