Yesterday my friend who knows nothing about computer called me and said he had a problem and needed me to come over. So I went over there and figured I'd be in and out, no big deal. Well I got a screen I have never seen before. I don't really have any specifics on the computer but it's running Windows XP and it was bought in March. It's an HP.

Here's what it said on the blue screen I got:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Unmountable -Boot- Volume

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to sure any hardware or software is properly installed. If this a new installation, ask your ardware or software manufacturer for any Windows update you might need.

If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to Advance Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

She said the she was trying to play a pre-installed game when it happened and that she got a loud screeching sound. She didn't install any programs or hardware that weren't installed when she got it. (She doesn't even know how to open the CD drive lol).

I tried several things to try to get past the screen. I booted in Safe Mode, I booted in Normal Mode, I booted in Normal Mode using the settings the last worked. All of these gave me the same blue screen. I unplugged the sound and printer and tried starting. Didn't work.

I don't know too much about using Windows XP so it could be something really simple to fix. Can anyone help out here?

Thanx!
