Hello and thanks for reading in advance!

I have XP Pro installed on an ibm pc and when I right click on the computer icon on my desktop or in the start menu and go to the computer's properties only six tabs show up instead of the usual seven.

I'm trying to add it to a domain and I'm unable to go to the computer name tab where I usually go to add it.

Any thoughts?
Thanks for your help!

You are logged on as administrator level user? Does it happen from all admin logons (try setting up new one)?

It sounds like a registry setting has been turned off otherwise - someone else here will probably know which. Googling might find it.

Which registry key? I am suddenly having the same problem.

I've basically given up on this one for a few days...arg...

mesmolin were you able to get this figured out?

No, not yet. I also couldn't run gpedit.msc but that seemed to be a problem with some permissions in my registry which are now ok. But still no computer name tab.

To change the computer name, to join a domain, or to add a computer description for a Windows XP-based computer, use the Computer Name tab in the System Properties dialog box. To locate this tab, use one of the following methods:

• Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

• Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.

• Click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

Hope this helps.

For those trying to help thanks but...

Neither scon44 nor I can see the computer name tab when we look at the system properties. Not through My computer, not through Control Panel system and not even running sysdm.cpl directly. And the Kelly's Korner site just changes the computer name. It does not allow you to change domains or workgroups. Something that I need to do all of the time.

However, I have had a new discovery. When I run sysdm.cpl from either the \I386 folder or the \windows\system32\dllcache folders it works, I can see the computer name tab and change the workgroup or domain.

If I copy either of these versions to \windows\system32 where sysdm.cpl is normally run from, then the Computer Name tab is still missing.

So scon44, try that and see if it helps. It at least gets me connected to the other domains I need.

How are you replacing sysdm.cpl in the System32 folder, perhaps you are running foul of Windows File Protection and not actually replacing it?

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
