computer locks up after windows taskbar loads, but before other progs

This only happens SOMETIMES, but it still forces me to restart the hard way.

Just after I log in I see the taskbar come up, and the computer then freezes. Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't work. It freezes before my AudioMixer, Norton AntiVirus, Detonator drivers for my Riva TNT 2, and some other stuff. I have checked but I don't see much out of the ordinary in the startup folders and registry. If you want i could post everything that starts. Any ideas?

What operating system are you using ? Win95 or Win98

Haha. Sorry about the lack of info. I use Windows 98 SE 500mHz 512RAM 32mbRivaTNT2 PIII.

what you may want to do is go to start> run> msconfig
in the start up tab uncheck everything except the following
scan registry, system tray, load power profile ( appears 2X
reboot the computer and see it you are experiencing the same symptoms. each time check the programs on startup when problems start happening I believe you have found the offending program. What you may also want to do is run scandisk then defrag, then go into system tools and run a disk clean up Please let us know if your having any luck
