I have:
Tyan Trinity 400 (S1854)
Windows 98 (latest version)
128 Meg PC133 memory
Internet explorer 6.0

Every so often the computer locks up. Usually this happen while on the internet.

Why? And how can this be corrected?

Have you made any changes lately, like memory or video card? If not you might take a look inside your case to see if there is an obstruction, may be a fan is not working, dirty heatsink. Leave the case off and see if it runs ok, of so need to add a system fan.

it could be heat, or driver issues, or os problems...

a LOT of thing could be causing it.

Can you give more details as to when the problems started, what exactly happens, all the hardware components you're running, all the software you are running...

As has been mentioned - could be many things, but biggest factor in my experience is the fact you are running 98. It is prone to this behaviour - I used to get it all the time on various machines, which is why I abandoned it for NT (later 2k/XP).

So my suggestion would be to add some memory and upgrade to XP (if you have some money to spend!). Otherwise, a clean install of 98 is always a good idea - if you have the time to reset everything up. If you get the machine locking up immediately after clean install, points to hardware issue. If you install XP (or 2k), and you have a hardware issue, the install will likely fail (which would be a positive indication of the problem at least).

You might try looking at faq608-4650.

It sounds like you could be being attacked by spyware/adware.

Hi there, looking at your BELARC report...

1.) do a Virus check, with a good and uptodate Virus scanner.

2.) do a Adware scan, use Ad-Aware 6.0 and SpyBot Search and Destroy 1.3.

3.) with Win98SE disk in the CD-drive, run under Windows SFC (system File Checker) this will get your System files uptodate.

4.) clear your Temporary Internet Files drawer aswell as your Temp drawer.

5.) REINSTALL all HOTFIX updates for Win98SE!!!! aswell as IE6SP1 with all its hotfixes!!!

6.) update your AOL software, if you are using AOL to enter the NET!

7.) disable the indexing feature of OFFICE, if possible.

8.) cross your fingers!

Ben

PS - @wolluf - never had this happen to me in 98SE, mostlikely due to the fact that I tweaked the hell out of 98... and kept the system clean.

Try all of those things and you can also try updating your IE to 6.0. But above all I would say dump the 98 and go to atleast 2k if not XP
