every now and then my pc connects to net for no apparent reason. I can't identify any processes or applications that might be initiating these connections so can someone please help me out? I can't leave my pc on anymore when I'm not there and it's costing me a packet. I have a supra-express 56k V90/92 dial-up modem if this is any help, and running XP pro on an athlon 2000xp 1.2Ghz processor.

It's me again......I've found out a little more about what's going on. I deleted the dial-up connection the computer was trying to connect to and now when it tries to connect i get a window asking me which service i would like to connect to. Also, and this is the crux of it, it says a program is trying to connect to microsoft.com.
any suggestions?

The problem is most likely that Automatic Updates for Windows are turned on. This can be turned off by:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type "msconfig" in the box
4. Click Open
5. Click the "startup" tab
6. At the very bottom of the list, there's an "Automatic Updates" box. Uncheck this box.

You can also uncheck other things in th startup tab that may be causing the dial-up box to pop up all the time.

no m8 - sorry! Thanks for the input but it was that blasted BLASTARD! BlasterwOrm[evil] I guess I snubbed the news for a while. Damn worm wreaked havoc on me but had a backup system on another HDD - phew!
