My pc freezes up in standby/hibernate mode every time. If I leave it idle for more than five minutes, it's totally responsless and I can't even get it back with cntl alt dlte.
I've de-dusted my towers components, removed all ad-ware and spyware, I'm virus free and my hard disk and ram are hardly being used. Has anyone dealt with this before? If so do you have any suggestions? I'm running xp pack 2 on a gateway select 800. Thanks!

is the screen freezing or is it actually hibernating properly, this results in the machine

I had a machine freeze due to a bad RAM wafer only a few days ago!

I'm not sure if you got the whole message you intended to post.. yes I think the whole pc is locked up because I can't get it back untill I unplug its power source and reboot, and that can't be good.

I quit using hybernate/standby years ago. Sooner or later it will cause problems. Now, I just turn off the monitor...

part of our basic build at work is to disable those features.

So standby mode should not be used then? I will disable it and see if my freeze ups go away. Thanks people.

Well, not necessarily. It really depends on the need. For laptops that are on the move often, it's essential. In fact I'm using one now that goes into Standby and wakes up within seconds.

Usually when there's problems after the OS goes to sleep, there is an issue with the hard drive or partition. You may want to consider backing up and reloading Windows if you can't find a fix. Good luck!
