Computer Goes Dark At Bootup

I have a brand new HP Media Center computer and whenever I boot up, the Windows XP initial screen appears and then the screen goes dark. HP support said it was the video card so I bought a new one so I could fix the problem immediately, and this didn't help. I can get into safe mode, but no further. Another HP support tech said the video card wasn't the problem and I should ship the CPU back. I hate to do this when it's only 3 weeks old. Oddly enough, the exact same thing happened with my computer that I just replaced. Any thoughts on what this could be? Thanks for any ideas!

I would try using the Recovery Console. Or try re-installing Windows yourself. Maybe even a different flavor of windows just to make sure. ( W2k instead of xp).
