Ok, this thing is driving me crazy. The computer had a problem with when it booted it came up with no start menu, taskbar, or icons. To fix that xp was reinstalled over the top of it's self. Now the only problem is that XP will not start. When it starts in safe mode now we have a start menu and icons but if you try to start window's normaly the computer hangs a few seconds into startup. I checked the boot log when the computer hangs and all it gives is it did not load afd.sys Does anyone have any information on what this file is or maybe how to repair it.

try reinstalling the video card driver whilst in safe mode.
check the event viwer for messages and uninstalling any additional software that has been recently installed. Try booting up with no network card and cd rom.

Any space left on hard drive? increase virtual memory

I know someone that had that exactly same problem.
But i couldn't fix it.
So the last thing i did was to make a new partition, reinstall winxp on it.
And it worked fine..
