Computer crashing and page faults question

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. My computer keeps crashing, often not long after I start up and it seems to happen when I either open an application or click on a link.

The event viewer only shows that the computer has rebooted from a bugcheck 0x024.

I am not sure how best to troubleshoot this or whether I can use other logs etc.

Also I was looking at the performance monitor, the %processor time is quite low but when I look at the page faults/sec I am getting a high of between 3,200 and 4,000 with an average of around 52. Can anyone tell me whether this is normal please?

Any help would be gratefully received, as would any good sites about the various counters and what kind of range is normal.

Kathy

Hi Kathy;

To answer your question about page faults. They are not faults in the true sense of the word. It is a count of how many time the processor had to go to disk (hard fault) to get program code or data that was not already in memory or get it from an area in memory not a part of the program base (soft fault). In any event it is not unusual to see numbers like you describe. Opening a small Excel spreadsheet can generate page faults in the thousands.

As for your problem, has anything changed recently. New hardware or software, driver updates. Any messages or does the system just sit there or reboot??? Can you reproduce the problem i.e "Every time I use notepad it dies"?

Are you exposed to the internet? Behind a firewall, have a virus scanner???

Ed Please let me know if the suggestion(s) I provide are helpful to you.

Thanks eguy,

It usually happens on opening an application such as Outlook Express or IE. The only thing I can think of that has changed recently is that I used convert.exe and converted to ntfs after having installed everything. No new hardware that I can think of.

Also I have added XP and now can dual boot if I choose, but have configured it not to give me the option at startup and to go straight to W2K.

I read about converting to ntfs afer installing the os sometimes affecting performance, but am not sure if it would do this.

I have an ADSL connection, but my ISP uses NAT so I am behind their firewall and also have Zone alarm. I have full virus protection.

Thanks

Kathy

hi kathy

try replacing your cooling fun and memory for a brand new one... and i recommended that you format your hardisk and install win2k or xp just select the fat 32. and follow the instruction of the win2k installer,, that will solve your problem

Kathy,

How did you add XP? (eg, is it on second hard drive, did you have enough space on 1st to create a second partition for it/use Partition Magic to shrink partition & create new one or did you just install it into same partition?)

just install it on the 1st one if you are using a win2k up you do not have problem selecting which os you should both up....

Thanks Clones, yes I did wonder if it was overheating, but it is running at around 50C. The 12 volt reading is showing at 13.28 though, on the Asus utility that was included with the motherboard, but lower in the bios, I am not sure if that would have an effect.

The RAM is just a cheap unbranded stick of DDR RAM, so I will change that as soon as I can. I will also reinstall everything and format during setup.

Thanks wolluf, XP is on its own partition on the first physical disc. I had a spare partition and used that.

thanks for the help everyone

Kathy
