After two and a half years, my computer suddenly slowed down on boot up and I wasn't able to log in to my user account on Windows XP. I was able to log in to the Guest account, but it was very slow. Then the next day my computer would restart in the middle of booting up. I tried to use the recovery discs, but half way through copying the files it would crash again and again at the same point (56% of files copied). I took it into a computer repair shop and he called my back yesterday saying after looking at it that the hard drive is gone. Before I have the hard drive replaced, does anyone know if this is a correct assessment? He tried to run his own recovery tools and it would crash on him as well. Thanks.

yes i would say the same thing, if you can install the hard drive your selfe becase the labor charges for hard drive install are huge.

it could also be several other things, i.e a faulty mb, a overheating power supply/processor(have you ever cleaned the fan) and so on.

by your error description i would rather say it´s not the hdd, but without having it physical examined you can´t tell.
do what @Jmhm17 recommends. a recovery cd is pretty simple to use so you should be able to do it yourself, but tell him if it´s not the hdd you want your money back (do it in writing)
