I'm running win2000 and twice now my computer has turned on by it's self after I've shut it down for the night, I'll come by the computer in the morning and low and behold its on! I've scanned for a virus but found nothing, any help will be greatly appreciated!

I had a jammed reset button once which caused a similar behaviour... AV

This has also been known to be caused by cleaners (at work) and cats (at home).

Your PC may be capable of Remote Wake-Up. We had a lot of newer Compaq Deskpro EN's that would do this. On the NIC there is a small cable attached that enables the machine to be "powered on" by a signal through the network.

Hope this helps.

Wake on lan takes a "special" packet to be sent to the computer to turn it on. It is highly unlikely that a random send on the network is turning on the PC.

Have you checked the event log to see what time the PC is turning on?

I tend to agree with JohnCurtis that it is likely cleaning people or a pet.

I have seen a similar problem and the IT pros I discussed it with concluded it was a 'wake-on-lan' problem. I suggest removing the 'wake-on-lan' cable from your netwrok card. If that stops the problem, so be it. If not, then I'm wrong.

A lot of computers can be configured to "wake up" at a predetermined time in the BIOS as well. I've seen this on Dell OptiPlexes a lot, and some HP machnes.

Most probable is a wake-on lan issue. On our Dell Optiplex's we had to turn off the ARP setting through the 3COM NIC software. If you have a Dell System using the onboard 3COM 3C905C-TX compat NIC adapter, email me and I'll send you the complete instructions we used to correct this problem.
