Suddenly some of my PM files cause the computer to beep from 2 to as many as 8 times when certain files are double-clicked to open. Does not happen with all files and I dont yet have a common denominator for files where it does. Also, diagnotstic recompose in PM never finds anything wrong and the files function and print properly. If file is saved after a recompose, it still causes same number of beeps the next time it is opened. Trashing preferences file does no good. Anyone ever encounter this? Just a nuisance at this point, but would like to know if I could get rid of it.

I would "save as", save "smaller" and keep copies in different folders in different drives if possible.. sounds like you have a corruption. Could be many causes.. the most likely culprits of course would be a funky font or bad image files.

Uninstall, reinstall fonts from source disks, to start.. use a font manager such as ATM Deluxe 4.1 to keep the active fonts to less than 150... also use only TIF or EPS graphics... don't use JPGs or MS metafiles if you can avoid it.. always use File>Place to insert images, never do a copy & paste to place an image...

Let us know how things go. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Here's what I finally came up with to fix this problem. (posted June 10) I dont really know why it worked. First I discovered the problem only occurred in PM 7. I f I saved a copy of the problem file in 6.5 and used 6.5 to open that file, no beeps. I considered this an emergency fix only. Second, back in PM 7, I found that even after deleting every image, style and text block on the page, it still opened with 8 beeps. I created a new page with the same document setup as the corrupted one. Then I simply opened the original "corrupted" page, copied all the elements and text blocks to the new page, and no more problem beeping. Probably not the correct way to solve a corruption problem, but it worked for me. I still cant figure out what was corrupted at the level of a blank page with no styles, though.

Actually your "fix" is a good way to repair a corrupted file. You likely had a low level corruption that would have eventually destroyed your doc.

This is a link to Adobe's extensive FAQ on repairing damaged files... it may have some other work-arounds. Anyway, glad to see you found a solution. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
