Computer - Compaq Presario 1247 Notebook
Without any previous problems, I booted up the notebook and WIn98 loaded normally, but during the loading of the systray, I received a blue screen "fatal error". I rebooted the machine only to receive the same error. I made the mistake of not documenting the error at the time. The next time I rebooted the machine, the computer turned itself off after Win98 had loaded. I rebooted in SafeMode and backed up essential data...then ran the Compaq Recovery CD. During Win98 startup, the computer once again turned itself off after Win98 had finished loading.

It seems to operate fine in SafeMode, but continues to turn itself off after a normal reboot. When the computer turns off, it is not a normal shutdown with the Windows is Shutting Down screen. Instead, it is similar to when the computer goes into suspend mode.

I would Advise creating a startup disk, boot off it, fdisk and format your drive.

Then boot using the Compaq recovery cd, if you have problems then..........let me know

I formatted the drive and loaded a licenced copy of Win98SE. Once loaded, everything seemed to be working fine except for a few missing drivers for the notebook features (including the proper driver for the LCD display...was limited to only 16 colors). I could not get the computer to recognized any of the drivers on the Compaq Recovery CD. Since all was working well, I ran the Recovery CD. After the recovery was complete, my problems started all over again...with the computer shutting itself off after bootup. I was able to capture the error message this time, which was as follows:

"Fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0035B1F in VXD IFSMGR(01) + 00002977"

You may have a hardware fault, memory perhaps......video??!!??

You wont be able to extract them from your recovery cd....thats the way they have been designed.

Id advise reload windows from a windows cd and download all the latest drivers for your compaq and install them. If it happens again then Id look at a hardware problem as stated above.

Let me know how you get on.....best of luck

Hi, so the notebook is giving you some problems. OK try starting in safemode and go to your registry editor. Go to find and search IFSMGR.VXD. Try removing all the registry link of that file. If youre lucky you will be able to see witch software uses the file.

BEST OF LUCK!!
