Can not get compression to work. Does anyone know the best way to get help with this?

hard-compress need your tape driver supports it.or you can use soft-compress which uses much resource of client.
 
You can select one of two types of compression: software or hardware. Which you select depends on which backup device driver you have installed. I've been told that if you are using Veritas's driver, you should use software compression. If you installed the driver made by the hardware manufacturer, then you should use hardware compression.
