I have typed one word and around the word i have drawn an pen outline, as i want the word to be placed over a graphic and have a wider outline than the text itself - the outline around the word is filled white - i want a complete transparent background so that whenever i place both text and outline over a colour the outline graphic will take up the background colour and be completely see-through. hope that makes sense!

Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but if you want to separate the text from the background what yoy can do is draw a contour around the text, separate it from the text then fill it in with white, this will give you the same effect as a pen outline but allows more flexibility. From there click on the interactive transparency tool and set it to "uniform." From there you can adjust the transparency to either fully transarent to opaque.

But if you want the background color itself to be transparent and the text outline to be opaque, copy and paste the background. Make the new object white then do the same thing as I mentioned above with the interactive transarency tool. Adjust the transparency until it looks how you want it.

Hope that helps!
