Hi all, a few months ago I installed Mandrake 9.1, but my windows modem isn't compatible. I have searched the web but can't find a download for any drivers: it's a HSP world micro modem 56k v90 PCI 56k pvp.I am also duel booting with Xp pro on d:\. Would a harware modem be more compatible for linux as mine is classified as a software modem?

thx in advance, cheers pech

ok Dave, thx for replying, would any hardware modem be sufficient for linux, and would this be ok for duel booting Xp pro and Mandrake, seeing as they will be using different drivers? Also, what is the difference between a hardware and a software modem pertaining to Linux and windows, or perhaps I ask too much!?

anyway, cheers pech

The guts of a modem is software. Winmodems/Software modems keep this code on the PC, which makes them fairly OS specific (hence, Winmodems). Hardware modems, on the other hand, keep the operating software for their "smarts" on the modem card itself in a chip. Basically, the software is the controller interface... but I digress.

Any how, if you find a hardware modem, it is almost certain that you can tell Windows that its a hardware modem capable of 115,000 bps operation with hardware flow control and you'll ok. Most likely, that's about all Linux will be interested in as well.

There may be some drivers supplied with the modem for Windows, you may use them. The software you load in the Windows area does not influence the use of the modem in Linux.

Go forth and be brave! Linux doesn't hurt. ;-)

Why don't the manufacturers say if their hardware works with Linux or not? I went to the USRobotics Website and looked I even found one that was sold out that said it was a serial port model too. But no where in the stats did it say it was Linux compatible. I don't get it with these companies, You would think they would bend over backwards especially now to list all their compatible stuff for Linux. What a shame. You would think they would adjust their heads on their shoulders and realize they could corner the market supplying Linux with Hardware from now on. What a waste. Sorry for venting. But I have Linux Mandrake 9.1 I have had it a few months now, and still have no modem for it. As a added note, I was told to get a hardware serial port modem for Linux. Told to stay away from the USB ones, because some of those can look real, but are in fact soft modems. I am through venting now.

hayes external modems are great, our server uses 2; and, this won't work for you, but my linux w/s uses a best data isa 56k with/ jumpers, and it works fine in my fic 503+.
