Hi!
I currently have Arcserve v.9 running on Win2000 machine and need to backup Groupwise 6.0 archives running on a Netware server. I have a client agent for netware already. Can I make do without purchasing Arcserve Server for Netware? Thanks!

No, this will not work. The Groupwise agent for GW6.0/6.5 comes free with ARCserve v9 for NetWare nowadays but it cannot be backed up form an ARCserve for Windows version (ie. used cross-platform)

regards

Are you sure? I am running Windows 2000 Arcserve on a Netwar 5.0 GroupWise 5.5 server with the groupwise client agent and I'd be real pissed to find out that its never going to work (I'm trying to set it up right now).

The Groupwise 5.5 agent uses Open File Agent Technology to backup Groupwise and the Open File agent for Netware works with ARCserve for Windows versions so you could try, but as far as I know there is no cross-platform functionality for database agents between ARCserve for Windows and Netware.

regards

I am doing something similar but I will be backing up GW 5.5 on NW 4.11 from a NW 6 server using Arcserve9. I am a little confused. Cyklops, you said the GW Agent is for GW 6 and 6.5. You then say that 5.5 uses ofa technology to do the backup. Does this mean the GW agent does the process differently when on GW 5.5 or does it not work at all? Also, do I also need the NWAgent on the GW server if I am going to use the GWAgent?

Thanks for the clarification,

DeeJay

As from ARCserve v9 for NetWare, when using Groupwise 6.0/6.5 on a NetWare 6.0 Server the new GWTSA (Groupwise Target Service Agent) can be used for GW backups. This is 'built in' in the base product of ARCserve v9.
When you want to backup GW 5.5 on a Netware 4.11 server with ARcserve v9 there are two possible scenario's (you cannot use the GWTSA because tis is only for GW 6.0/6.5):
- Stop Groupwise and do a 'flat file' backup.
- install the Groupwise agent (optional purchase) on the GW server wich will use open file technology to backup GW while it is running.

hope I'm clear

Cyklops,

Thanks for the good reply. That is what I had come to after speaking with CA Licensing department this morning. There must have been some type of confusion when we worked this out with our vendor. We were told that GW Agent was included and I don't ever remember them asking what version of GW we were on. We do have the Open File Agent. Can that be used to backup our GW files? What would be the difference between using the GW agent and OF Agent?

CA tech support told me that the GW agent for Netware only works if you are backing up to an Arcserve for Netware server (which I'm not, I use Win2K advanced). They suggested I try using the Open File Agent to back up my groupwise files, but everytime I try to back up my GW 5.5 server using the client agent and the OFA, my server crashes. I have purchased St Bernards Open File Manager for Netware and am testing it this evening. Hopefully it will back up my groupwise without crashing the server.
I'll post results here.

Still concerned,
Sean
