compaq with windows NT, hangs on "Starting Windows"

A friend has a compaq sp750 professional workstation, running windows NT, or 2000, (depending on whether you believe the giver, or the sticker on the machine). He asked me for assistance.

We do not have an NT or 2000 rescue disk.

First there was a problem with the power-on password. Solved by removing the battery and booting a couple of times. Have now replaced the battery.

Now it hangs after loading the line on the bottom of the screeen, with the "Loading Windows" message.

Have tried some configuration functions, and run the diagnostic on the hard-drive. Still no help.

There is probably a very simeple solution, I just don't know what it is. Any help would be appreciated.

When it hangs on booting Windows there is definitely an issue with the startup. Assuming it's a Win2K machine, have u tried pressing F8 during bootup to try running in safe mode (I doubt NT has this option). Otherwise I don't if you can download a trial of Windows 2003 from the MS site (don't know if it's still avail) and try running the recovery console from it.

Check your power settings in the BIOS, as you have basically reset it.

have already tried the above, with no success.

I have a friend who says he can make a disk that will reset all the passwords and that should get us going. One can always hope.
