hi i have an Compaq proliant server,

hardware
2 X 200 Mhz Pentium PRO.
64Mb Ram.
5x 4.3 Gb Hdd ScSi 10K rpm. (Raid 5 16Gb)
2 lan adapters.

not real impressing, but good enough for a litle webserver.
so on with good hope i tried linux fedora core 3...
after about 1 minute... Bla BLa not enough memory.. @least 128Mb...

does anone know a stable linux version for running webmin Apache and PhP.?

already Thanks allot.. Steven Aka Chaot

With 64MB of RAM I think you're going to be generally disappointed. My first thought is to try Debian. It doesn't install the GUI X Windows and doesn't seem to care about minimum memory, largely because everything you install is a la carte not in the kernel or by default.

However, I think PHP uses about 4MB per instance of apache, and apache normally runs about 10 instances of itself by default. Thus you'll likely always be hitting the swap file and will wear out your disks.

I suggest you go ahead and spend $29 and add a bunch more memory.

The newest version of apache are threaded, so they share a lot more of the foot print, but it's also larger in gerneral... So, memory will still be an issue.

Debian or Slackware would problably be best, as they are the least frills... You can even pear down FC, but that takes time, as the "minimal package set" is too big for what you need.

I'm running FC3 on my firewall, a P3/233 with 92MB of RAM and a 4GB drive. An FC minimal install fit on the disk easily and it's currenly using (after subtracting out file buffers) 40MB of RAM and 200Kb of swap.

It's a dual homed firewall running IPTables and no GUI, but I've got ntop and a few other monitors running, so I think as a toy/trial machine, FC would be fine to run on that box.

I've found the RPM support for the web packages I run on my production web servers to be very acceptable in terms of integration, currency and security.

Yeah, but eric the OP wants to run Apache + PHP. I've run RH7.x on 32MB in a firewall profile as you describe. But Apache + PHP on 64MB seems like a longshot.

hmmm okay,

good advice... what would u do? the machine is in real good state...

do u think an investment for 256Mbwould be a good idea?

thankx again!

For the price of 256MB of RAM it's worth it. One of the things you should think about though is the power consumption of this box given that you will be getting very little benefit from it. These boxes send your eltricity meter into a complete spin!

hi,

good argument's all,

I upgraded the compaq machine to 256 Mb
running server 2000 and 3 shoutcast stream's, a litle pitty for the storage space (5X 4.3Gb in raid 5 ) 16Gb,
(now using almost 3 Gb)

now the next problem is this...
This machine is to be placed in a data center in amsterdam, (some small sites (for development so speed is not important)and 3 winamp stream's) (my boss has a full rack that's half empty so i can use some rackspace there)

Now there was the choice

Use this old dual Cpu machine from compaq, with its safe raid system,

Or rebuild my current smal home server in a new 19" rackcase. It's a P3 1000Mhz, 512 DRR333, a 40 Gb maxtor ide ata 100 drive.
this now runs Fedora core 3 with Webmin / usermin / virtualmin and works realy nice! except for needing to buy a case for rack mounting, rebuilding the machine in the new case and second problem is that it's not backupped.. (no raid drive) just a single maxtor,if it crashes all is lost...

Now i have to find a solution for that,

I was thinking, could i run (both are comming in the same rack) a backup from the linux machine to the Compaq machine? or is there a other solution? (like using storage space from the compaq (a share) as root for apache's site's?

or is it just better to buy a simple raid card and strip the data amongst 2 40 Gb drive's???

thnx again Chaot_s.

Ps the electricity is not a real big problem in the way of availabillity, but in the other way using les is better,

I don't you said anything meaningful in that last post. Was there a question somewhere in there? How about taking a moment with your thoughts and asking a direct question?
