I recently installed a new system board and power supply for a customer that took a hit from the power company. after replaceing parts, system seemed to work fine...except (Always)...when you push the power button on front of compaq presario 5070 it will only go into sleep mode. Hold it down....nothing happens. when I shutdown, it says "it is now safe to power off your computer" and hangs. Press and hold the button...nothing. only way to shut off system is with power switch in back of machine. Compaq has helped to a total level of ZERO!! Have tried all power management settings and all windows 98 supplements as well as about 20 other things. Any ideas out there?

sounds as if you put an at MB into an ATX case ( or vice versa) If it weren't for users, computers would work just fine.

Have you looked in BIOS to see if the power button is set to put the machine in Sleep mode? If so, change it to power off.

BIOS does not have any setting for APM or APCI. Nothing at all to do with Power button. Have even re-flashed BIOS to no avail. could power supply cause the processor to overclock? My benchmark testing shows the processor to be off the map. have re-ordered sys bord and processor. am wondering about power supply though. have tried different operating system. still no results. Thanks for all your assistance!

Did you update power management from Compaq. Are thier any acpi errors in event viewer. Is APM disable in device manager (Show hidden devices)

I have updated power management and I see no errors. APM is enabled. Still no luck. Thanks for your advice.

Go to Control Panel -> Power Options.

Sometimes you will have an Advanced tab, with various settings for the power button - turn system off, put system in standby, and possibly others.

Still to no avail. Thanks for assistance though. Could power supply cause this kind of problem? Have noticed that processor is having strange benchmark reading. should be around 350 but is reading 1200+. all jumpers are correct and the same as previous system board.

How long did you hold in the button? I know it sounds funny, but I learned that my Compaq's button has to be held in for at least 5 seconds before it will power off.

Just trying to be helpful.

Held button down for over 3 minutes once, multiple times over 30 seconds. Thanks!

"have re-ordered sys bord and processor"

Good call.....from experience you probably have bad parts...
I used to run into all sorts of things when I was a bench tech doing repairs for Compaq. We ended up refusing to service that line.

The professional systems and servers were awesome and the support was great...not so for the retail line.

Keep us posted! Kimber
