Help, I have a Compaq Presario desktop, just loaded windows 2000 and now have no audio. I tried downloading the ESS Allegro ES19899S (motherboard soundcard) driver, but it wouldn't load. I'm not sure where to go or what to do next. Thanks in advance.
Go to device manager and see if the soundcard is listed and if it shows an error.
If it is listed without errors check sounds and multimedia in control panel and the audio tab and make sure the three drop down boxes reference the appropriate sound card.
If it shows an error the drivers tab has a button to update drivers pick it and have disk and point it to the location of the new drivers.
I put 2000 on my Presario and had wave sound but no CD audio. The CD audio is turned of by Windows 2K by default. You have to go to the device manager for each CD drive and enable the drive for audio playback. I also have to download a new Win 2K driver for SoundBlaster. All is working fine now.
