Hello,

A friend of mine has a Compaq Presario 2500 laptop.

Her screen has coloured patches over it in places and can only really see the top right corner.

I thought it may be video drivers need re-installing or maybe the connector from the motherboard to the screen has been slightly dislodged.

I've not actually seen the laptop yet, just been told whats wrong with it.

Could it be anything that i've said above or is the screen just basically knackered?

Thanks for any help!

Regards.

Could be any number of causes, for sure a video problem, may be a simple driver problem. For starters I would try booting in safe mode and see the results, go from there.

that is called Artifacting, and can be caused by:

1. corrupted driver as per xit...
2. overheating, ergo clean it out...
3. bad video ram...
4. overclocking, wrong timing...

oh right i see,

so basically i'll have to open it up, clean it out and test all the parts.

laptops are awkward to open at the best of times haha.

thanks

see if it has those splotches also in the BIOS setup screen... it would rule out timing / overclocking problems or driver problems... but could indicate dust build up, meaning temperature build up, or worse RAM damage...

Basically check the temps, if they are too high then open it up and clean it out...

ain't that the truth...

I'm happy i can install the lcd but in the manual it says i need a service utilities disk but i don't have one, anybody know where i could download it from???

Important

After replacing the display assembly or motherboard, you must use the Service Utilities floppy disk
to reprogram the EEPROM on the motherboard for the new display.
1. Download the notebook series service package from the Partnership Web site (see page vii),
and create a Service Utilities floppy disk as described in the packageÌs Readme file.
2. Plug in an AC adapter.
3. Insert the Service Utilities floppy disk in the floppy drive. If the unit has no internal floppy drive,
connect a USB floppy drive.
4. Turn on the notebook.
5. When you see the HP logo, press ESC to display the boot menu, then boot from the floppy
drive.
6. Select the option to update the display/LCD identification stored on the motherboard.

I have been to HP/Compaq site and can not find this Service package - is there somewhere else I could get this or is there a way around this?

Sounds like i don't even need the disk, just another way for Compaq/HP to try and get more money out of you by the looks of it!

The way I read it, you need the disk or a shop who partners with HP...

the statement by the second poster, was that he did not need it, because he only opened it and reclosed it, not changing anything...

I could be wrong...

you could be right, i've searched around the net about it before but still not 100% sure.

i've got a detailed description of how to remove and replace the display.

i'll give it a try and see if the new one works.

i can't see any reason why it wouldn't work with a different screen in but you never know.

also i was wondering about getting a wireless card for her.

seen the Intel WM3B2200BG Internal Wireless Card 802.11g card, i'm pretty sure it will fit but will it fit the presario 2500?

one thing i'm not sure about though is the antenna's, anybody know if 2500 have built in antenna's?

Can't help you there...

I would suggest the use of a USB version instead, as they have build in antennas, if there is no SLOT or Antenna build in the laptop...

I'm pretty sure there's the pcmcia slot now, think i'll go with that rather than the mini pci as it'll be a lot easier.

also i don't need that disk according to hp...

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

Glad to hear that it is pretty easy, and that HP has provided an instructional manual on how to do it...
