I have a Compaq Presario 5000Z desktop. I bought a new hard drive to practice installations with, like Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP Pro, etc. The problem is Compaq will not allow the O/S's to be installed (like XP), or they do so with all kinds of errors an conflicts (2000 Pro). Since it came with Me on the original hard drive, it only wants Me to be installed. I bought the new drive to practice installations from scratch, but I'm guessing proprietary problems forbid this. I'm doing this to practice for my A+ certification, but I'm having no success. Did anyone ever have this problem before? Can anyone help me out, or point me in the right direction? Compaq also has a problem with drivers, none of them seem to work. The Compaq site will not even allow me to even download them, because I'm trying to install an O/S other than originally came with the computer?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I figured it was a proprietary issue, that's why I went out and bought another hard drive. Silly me, I assumed this would resolve the problem. I thought starting with a clean hard drive would eliminate any hidden partition problems, but no such luck. The original HD is still set up with the factory specs. The new HD; which had nothing on it is the HD I'm trying to install different O/S's on. All I did was mount it next to the original and hook it up, of course I unhooked the original's wiring to avoid conflicts. I'm still at a loss for what to do, and I sent an e-mail to Compaq/HP. I don't expect them to give me a satisfactory answer, but I'm at least giving it a shot.

Woodwise, just a supplement for whatever the other guy told U to do.. I have a friend asked me to help him get his compaq machine fixed, as it has its windows ME having all sorts of problem. I reformatted it and installed my own Win98 cd,,and it did..but then i got problem with the devices, all looking for the proprietary drivers. I ended up chatting with tech support txt mode and this guy pointed me to the reality that drivers cant be just downloaded from HP/Compaq website as they are so many,starting with PCI slot drivers etc, before u can even get the modem, cd, and other drivers..so he pointed me to order the "Restore Cd" that installed all the original software for that Compaq model PC. for $10 that my friend order via the 800 phone.
and that did it! The have a compaq chipset in the bios that whont allow any other drivers loaded unless u can bypass those chipset..how..i dont know how hehe

rben;
good advice
