Can anyone help on this one ?
Somewhere along the line whilst using Quick Restore to recreate a fresh Windows 2000 environment + all latest upgrades, the Computer Serial Number has disappeared from the BIOS.

I have a record of the Serial Number, but does anyone know how I can re-enter the number into the BIOS ?

Thanks
Jim Crawford

Send it to COMPAQ repair.

There is nothing done at the OS level that will reset a BIOS value such as this.

And there is no utility to reset the manufacturer's BIOS ID.

I should note it is stored in NVRAM and not the BIOS per se.

Did you contact Compaq? What did they say? If not you should. Sounds like you may have to return it unless Compaq can help you online/over the phone.

You should be able to set the system IDs under the security menu of the BIOS.

I do have a compaq utility for clearing/setting the serial number in the BIOS. I have no idea if this would work on your notebook. but I can email it to you, if you want to try it.

This did come direct from Compaq.

Many thanks to all for the help.

I would be very pleased to try the Compaq utility for clearing/setting the serial number.
Please would you forward it to j.crawford@titusfield.co.uk.
