Before I ask the question I will give you the server spec:-
Compaq Proliant 1600
Nt Server 4
Smart - 2/P SCSI Contoller
Raid 5 Array
5 x 4.3GB Disks Model:- Compaq ST34572WC Ultra Wide SCSI
Using Compaq Management

I am recieving the following error in the system log of the NT Event Viewer:-

THE DEVICE, \DEVICE\SCSIPORT0, DID NOT RESPOND WITHIN THE TIMEOUT PERIOD.

There are many of these errors and it causes the machine to lock up and drop off the network forcing a reboot.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've seen this problem on a number of Dell PowerEdge servers, but not on Compaq (yet). FWIW, on the Dells the error related to the SCSI which connected to a DAT tape drive, not to the array controller. Getting updated NT tape drivers and changing the tape controller's BIOS configuration (reducing transfer rate and turning wide negotiation off) solved the problem.
RJS,
Thanks very much for the reply. I am not an expert on hardware so sorry if this is a stupid question......but

Why when the server has been running happily for 2-3 years do the drivers need updating or the BIOS need upgrading all of a sudden.

Thanks....Paul
I have often asked myself (and Dell, Cheyenne, etc. tech support) the same question!! The only semi-logical explanation is that compatibility issues or flaws sometimes do not manifest themselves until certain utilization thresholds are reached. That's my best guess anyway.

The SCSI bios does not need upgrading, just the settings sometimes need to be changed.

Back to your specific problem. What are you running for backups? Is it ARCserve? And do the lockups seem to occur while backup or restore jobs are running?

To resolve this issue, the Compaq SCSI controller driver CPQ32FS2.SYS should be updated using the Compaq SSD for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Version 2.14A, which is available as Compaq SoftPaq SP10445 and downloadable from the Compaq website:
<A HREF=" TARGET="_new">
Exactly the same problem...After 2 years of perfect usage, NT starts throwing up the 'timeout' message in Event Viewer when backing up.

We have ArcserveIT for WinNT on an IBM Netfinity - I'm about to attempt to go into SCSI bios and reduce the transfer speed (although I could swear I've always seen a 'Scusi boot BIOS not installed', or something)

Oh well, I'll find out this evening.

Keith
