If you don't get the Compaq logo and/or a press F2 (or F10) for setup message, you will need the service disk. You can get that from the compaq site once you know the model and part number. This software originaly was on a partition on the HD.
on earlier compaqs, and up until they got a clue, they use to put the CMOS information on a proprietary partition... if this drive was low level formatted, or if the partition was removed with FDISK, then you will not be able to make changes...
good news... you can download and setup a 2 to 3 floppy set (depending on the model) and boot from it... you can then manage the CMOS settings...
bad news... unless you feel like completely reloading, your gonna have to deal with the floppies until the next time you reload... the floppys have the capability of recreating this partition on a blank hard drive...
advantage... keep the floppies in a safe place, and only YOU will have access to make the advanced CMOS changes...
My machine is a Presario 5724. The system ROM date is 09/08/99 and the System ROM Family is 686c2.
For those who might misunderstand my question, my bios is intact and functional. I find it, however, to be less than useful because it has only allows the most basic changes. Heck, it only gives me two options in boot order: cd or floppy. I am just wondering if I can't just get rid of it and replace it with another bios?
i am not totally sure about this but maybe the bios is flashable and you can get an up-to-date flash bios from the mfr. and flash the bios to get more or better control of your system!!! just a thought
