I just picked up two AP400 machines from my work. They are 550 mhz. I put two 550mhz processors in one of the machines. However, it is saying that the cpu in the second slot has failed on boot. It continues to boot and work OK. It just doesn't see the second cpu. How can I get it to use the second processor? I have tested the processor and they both work fine.

If the second cpu is not from an upgrade kit from compaq, make sure that the cpu's have the same stepping, otherwise they will have problems in a dual system. look for a 5 character code on the cpu (SL4SE,or something similar) Then go to intel.com and look up the specs of the cpu's and see if they are the same stepping. Also your VRM or voltage regulator module for the second cpu might not be the correct one for the system,or is bad.

Thanks for your help. The 550mhz cpu's both are from Compaq AP400's. Should I assume that they should be compatible, since they are from the same company and from the same model? Also, could bios version come into play with this situation?

Do you have a Voltage Regulator Module installed for each processor?

Hope this helps

No I don't. All I have done, is pull a 550 mhz PIII cpu from a like machine and added it to the new machine. What is the voltage regulator and how would I go about getting that?

You can get VRMs on eBay for very little - whether you need one or two depends on how many your motherboard requires. You CAN get them from Compaq, IBM or other main vendors - most retaillers don't sell them. However, these companies will charge well over the odds for what is essentially a few capacitors and a heatsink. Guide price you should expect to pay is £10 ($18).

No Multi-Processor system I am aware of will work without at least one. You should see the slot for the VRM near to the processor - looks a little bit like an IDE slot.

I've seen Compaq-specific VRMs on eBay many times - make sure you buy from a reputable seller with good feedback!

I checked the board and there was one VRM in there next to the first processor and there was another slot for a second VRM next to the slot for the second processor. I now have two VRM's on the board and two processors, but I have not had time to check it. I will test it tonight. Thanks for your help.

First of all I am glad I came across this thread. I just inherited a P3 600mhz Compaq Deskpro EN and wanted to juice it for all it has. I would like to upgrade it to a dual processor computer. I couldn't find anything that says this is possible on this model. So I would like to swap out the mother board with a AP400 mother board which I have had for some time now. Is the processor I have compatible with this mother board? Will this work? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
