I have a Compaq Presario 2800T which has the built in 802.11b Multiport. I redid my system to so that I could have a dual boot. Then I tried to reinstall the wireless module, but everytime it is copying the files for the driver it gives me an error of "Access is Denied". My user account has administrator priveledges. I have tried the driver disk that came with the system as well as the latest driver updates that I got from the web. I am running Windows XP Home. The module works fine under the Windows 2000 partition, but when attempting to install under XP is when I get this error. Any help will be much appreciated.

I have given myself access to the folder in question, and I am still given the same error.

You may have to repeat the process for the registry. Use regedit and right-click the HKLM hive, and set the security permissions including all subkeys.

Well i tried that too and still same thing. its really drivin me crazy.!

See if there is a message in the Event Log that offers a more detailed explanation.

i have tried looking in event viewer and there are no entries for the times that i attempted to install the card.

The only thing I can think of is that occasionally XP will copy files from a CD with read-only priviliges set.

Print out a list of the files from the installation CD that are clearly driver related: *.dll, *.sys, *.inf, *.cat. Do a search for them, and right-click and examine the properties. You may be able to uncheck read-only from the file at that point.

Otherwise, right down the directory location, filename, and from a CMD session ATTRIB -r filename in each case.

Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. thanks for the help though. this is about to drive me crazy. i think i may end up needing to redo the system again and start over. thanks

I finally got the card installed. I had to remove the catalog file from all the other files and manaully import it. Then it let me install the drivers fine. THanks for all the help.
