We have a mess of new 6400R's running Winnt4 Enterprise and Windows 2000. We have applied the latest ROMPAQs and installed them using SmartStart 4.60. The problem is that when we try to reboot them (most of them) they dont come backup until we power them off for 2-10minutes then power them back on. Compaq has been pointing their finger at W2K, but it happens on NT4 as well...neither of them even get to the POST let alone anything that could be caused by the O/S.
Thanks.

We have seen this problem on Compaq in the past. Seems as if the
power supply needs a "resting" period before rebooting. I know of no
way to correct this.
David J. Aller
GoTech@GoTechnologiesInc.com
<a href= Computer Systems & Networking Services
I've seen this also a while back, I seem to recall unplugging it for 10 seconds or so sometimes helped.
Hope this helps a bit,
I agree with pmkincaid. We have a couple of machines that do not always reboot accordingly. We need to unplug them. We also have one machine that when brought down if unplugging the box does not help we need to re seat the Array controller card. Apparently the box thinks that the array needs to clear before rebooting.

oneworld@goes.com

r u running insight manager on these Compaq's???? If so is insight manager trapping any errors????? And does Compaqs Diags report any errors....on the hardware at all??? There is a reset period for Compaq Power supps...not sure of the duration though...should not be too long...any thing out of sorts on DAAD report???

Now when u say reboot r u talking about a cold or warm reboot....????

I have the same problem with a DL580 with NT4.

A shut down and restart gives a blank screen.
I find it must be powered off for a few minutes and at times it helps to unplug power.

Also, believe it or not, smacking the bottom of the server helps it along.

I had the same problem with a DL380 and it turned out to be the voltage regulator for the CPU. a simple little swap fixed it.

Compaq denies knowing of these problems and insisted that I upgrade the BIOS and reinstall SP6a.

Well, I did that and it still doesn't help.

If any of you find a resolution to this, I would be very greatful.

Thanks!

I am having the same problem with a Proliant 2500 server. I have just installed 2k on it and whenever the system needs to reboot, it goes through the motions but then gives me a blank black screen with a flashing underscore cursor in the top left of the screen. The only way to get it to come back is to turn off and then back on. The weird part of it is that it was working fine as an nt4 box.

Is there options in Smart Start for things like power save or resume mode? If so, these should be disabled as this could have the effects described I presume. -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

I've seen the same on a PL6400R. This was a while back. Called in Services and they spent a week swopping around boards and spares. They got it sorted in the end, think it was a power regulator on the main board or something. Just keep bugging Services until they fix it. If the server is a million miles away and noone around, you can't very well settle for a "rest" period before it's restarted.
