IE
The Company I work for has just changed it's name as of 1st January. Our Domain name is 'companyname.ie' and we need to change it to 'newcompanyname.ie.'

We have a mix of Windows 2000 & 2003 Servers that are all part of the Domain 'companyname.ie' .

Our Email addresses are user@companyname.ie .

We use Exchange 2000

Does anyone know whats involved on the Exchange side in moving email to a new domain?

I've already spoken to our ISP and they can create the new MX record and forward the mail etc, but how do I change the email addresses etc?

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks

Add the new address to the default recipient policy as the default reply address and do an update now. This should add the new address to all e-mail enabled objects unless you have checked the box not to allow the RUS to stamp this object.

So in System Manager/Recipients/Default Policy/Properties,
Under Email Addresses (Policy) I add in the newcompanyname.ie into here.

I also need all our email addresses to change from user@companyname.ie to user@newcompanyname.ie

How do I do this? Is it just a case of editing each address in the Active Directory?

Or is there a simpler way of doing it?

Thanks

If you go into Active Directory Users and Computers, open any user property, click the Tab: E-Mail Addresses and check if the you have to check the box at te bottom '
Automatically update...'
In that case, all users will automatically get a second SMTP address, the default being the default in the Recipient Policy. If not, you need to make sure the default SMTP address for each users is the correct (new) one.

I would suggest you keep the 'old' domain for a while, so you don't lose out on any mailings.

Ok, I've done that for my user, added in the new SMTP address under Email Addresses, and I have the option checked 'Automatically update Email addresses based on recipient policy'

I have also added the new Domain to the Default Recipient Policy. How do I get my email address to appear as user@newcompanyname.ie?

Thanks

It sounds as if you are working the wrong way around.

FIRST you needed to check the 'autoamiticaly ...' boxes, then add the new domain to the default recipents, in that case, ALL users will automatically get the added new SMTP address.
In the Active Directory Users and Computers, open any user property an make sure the DEFAULT is the new one.
You select the new one and click Set as Primary

OK, I'll do it in that order so - I have not actually gone live with this yet, just finding out whats involved first.

So to Clarify, after adding in the new Domain in the Email Adresses tab in AD & checking the 'Automatically...' tab, I then add the new Domain to the Default Recipient policy in System Manager.

I then set the new email address as primary in the Email Addresses tab in Active Directory for each user?

Thanks

That is it.

I then set the new email address as primary in the Email Addresses tab in Active Directory for each user?
That only needs to be done if it did not work automatically of course, just check them randomly.

Are there many users? As you may have a lot of work manually ...

Ok, thanks for the info.

There are about 60 users in total - is there a way you know of to automate the process?

See points 10 and 11 specifically:

Or, you can rebuild the Recipient Update Service

Thanks a lot for all the help, I've a lot to go on there!

I've added the new domain into the Default Recipient Policy, but I have'nt applied the new policy or put a check next to the new domain name. The old company name is still checked.

I went into System Manager, SMTP Virtual Server Properties/Access/Relay Restrictions/Add and I have added the old company name and the name company name - oldcompany.ie & newcompany.ie

I have added the new company domain name to all user email addresses in the Active Directory.

I can send internal mail to user@newcompany.ie but external mail cannot be sent, I get an NDR back to the sender.

I can still send internal & external mail to user@oldcompany.ie

Where do I go from here?

Thanks
