I am consulting for a school that has a SBS 2003 server with Exhange 2003. They would like to set up a central place to store all the parent contacts. The parent contacts will store name, address, phone, email, etc... I tested putting the parents in as contacts in AD, but then they show up in the GAL. There are over 500 parents so this will not work. I also have another client that would like to set up a central contact list for vendor and customers. This is the same problem. Has anyone done this before and if so what worked best for you.

Thanx

Thanks this will work. The only problem I found is you can not open a contact in OWA and click send mail.

Hmm, my mailbox just got moved to Exchange 12 and Exchange 12 OWA lets you do it. I don't recall if it is supposed to work or not in Exchange 2003, sorry.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Not to hijack the thread - but how do you like Exchange 12 Mark?

Sounds good Mark...thanks for the insight.

Public folders should be installed by default if you are using Exchange.

To import the contacts. Either use your contacts folder in Outlook to create all the contacts or create a new folder under your contacts and then create the contacts there. Once the contacts are all created, just click on one the Ctrl-A (select all), Ctrl-C (copy). go to the public folder and create a new folder and select contact items. Paste all your new contacts there.

Thanks for the response, I am converting almost 300 rolodex cards into this project and wanted to build an excel spreadsheet to import. Is this possible?

Anything is possible if you have the skills I suppose. It should be possible to take your Excel spreadsheet and create contacts via vbscritp & Outlook, then drag those contacts into the public folder.

Scripting Outlook is a major pain in my opinion though. Post a question on how to do this in the vbscript forum for assistance. Hopefully someone else will have a sample for you as I do not.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

You could also do an export of your contancts into a .csv file to get the header information that outlook is using and then you should be able to import your csv file with your data. Also you could possibly just save your existing data in a csv file and map the fields of your worksheet with the fields out Outlook contacts.
