Hi

My computer was on and running fine when i left it, i came back a few minutes later and it had apparently hung (looked like it was in sleep mode, but would not wake up) so i restarted. However, now it will not post, the hdd makes it's noises but it will not load the BIOS screen. I get no beeps. I have tried unplugging the hdd but this does not make any difference, it still will not post. All fans, GPU, CPU and PSU are working, all cards are seated firmly .

Any ideas? I have no spares here so cannot test.

Thanks in Advance.

Remove and refit graphics card.

Hi Martin

1. Thanks, i have tried removing the card, reinstalling the card, then starting - no difference.

2. I have tried removing the card, starting i get one 1 second beep and three 1/2 second beeps. I then turn off and put the card back in and it does the same as no 1.

-At no point does the monitor power on it stays in sleepy mode.

I am running a thunderbird 1000 on a asus A7V -old and WAS a sturdy work horse!

Thanks.

Try what paparazi said. If that doesn't work, try removing all cards (except the graphics card) and see what happens.

Did you try resetting the BIOS,either with a jumper or removing the battery?

Because the beep code remains the same, with or without a graphics card and understand I don't know what that particular beep code means on your board but it would point towards an AGP problem, bad card or AGP slot.

Thanks for your posts chaps.

I have stripped the board back to cpu and memory only -when i turn it on i get a one second beep and three half second beeps.

If i now plug in my graphics card, and start the computer it does not beep, but it will not load into bios.

I have tried removing the battery -it makes no difference.

I have checked the board and on the surface all seems to be in order, nothing smoked or blown or leaking!!

Continuous thanks,

I have AWARD BIOS: The beep codes are correct, because when i remove the GPU it beeps, when it is in it does not!

1 Long, then 3 Short Beeps: Video error

Explanation: The BIOS is unable to access the video system in order to write any error messages to the screen.

Diagnosis: This is usually caused by a problem with the video card, or the memory on the video card. It can also be a motherboard issue.

Recommendation:

* Troubleshoot the video card.
* If the video card is not at fault, troubleshoot the motherboard.

When the GPU is in place, i get no indication of error and no information on the screen. Incedentally, my moitor does cease to display the no input signal message when it is plugged into the GPU -i don't know if this is a good indication of a correctly functioning GPU.

"i came back a few minutes later and it had apparently hung (looked like it was in sleep mode, but would not wake up) "

Could be the the video board died on you in this time period (is was not sending any signal then),if so reseating wont help much .

It is a possibility that the video card has died, something which i will check out in a couple of days time ( i currently do not have the facilities available) . ~I hope not it is only two months old!!

It has also been suggested that the PSU could have failed. I wil also be checking this out in a couple of days time.

Many thanks so far..

I will let you know the outcome.
