The following common nouns are all commonizations: aspirin, zipper, nylon, and teflon.

How many commonizations can you identify? It would be interesting to identify the corresponding eponym and why the commonization occurred.

JUST DON'T REFER TO YOUR CELL PHONES AS CELLS!!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist!

In the US we use scotch tape as a generic for cellophane tape, even though 3M corp has a copyright on that name.

Teflon is another commonization.

Bic pen is pretty close if not there already.

Melamine used to be a trademark, now used for almost any hard plastic dishes.

Sanka is used by a lot of people to mean decaffienated coffee.

Spam is a commonization, but the product it refers to has changed.

And cheapest? Luves!

The proper term is Kleenex Tissues. Generically they are called "facial tissues" (to distingiush them from toilet tissue).

"Hoover" is going out of fashion, "Dyson" is coming up rapidly, as in "the carpet was dirty, so I dysoned it". I can't find it in a dictionary, but I hear it used..., so it can't be long.

Oh, and from a UK perspective, "Fos-tuhs" is Australian for something that is most certainly NOT beer. The UK description would, most probably, get this post RF'd.
