Anybody any recommendations for a newbie PowerBuilder who
has plied his trade in Access? Is there any resources out
there especially for people going down this migration path?
Any responses would be very much appreciated! Thanks.
Am also looking at using SQL Anywhere studio instead of
Access as a backend. Any comments? Would I be better looking
at one of the bigger databases (Sybase, SQLServer, MySQL,
Postgres et al)? Thanks.
im a new user of powerbuilder too...
it depends on what file or data you will manipulate... for example
you will use .dbf file its better to use visual foxpro
or mdb for access...
my mentor told me that one of the best feature of powerbuilder is to have its own database (SYBASE)...
What is it you are trying to do? Is your program something for a small group, medium group, or large group? Do you wish to take advantage of stored procedures, triggers, referential integrity, etc. available in 'real' databases? What is your budget for the project?
I happen to favor MS SQL Server but I've worked with Oracle, Sybase, and Access too. With ODBC you can connect to just about any datasource you want.
My experience is in Access, VB and R:Base - also
SQL Server, MySQL and some PostGres. I am looking to
evaluate PowerBuilder and want to get a real feel
for the product by doing a fairly decent application
that I have already developed in one of the others
above (as you do to get used to a new environment).
I was looking for some pointers or links or books or
something to get me started. As my clients tend to
prefer Access over the others, I do a lot of development
in Access, so I was wondering if there were any other
developers here that have made the move from Access
to PowerBuilder and could point me in the right
direction coming from an Access background.
While I will continue to use the DBMS's above, I want
to try Sybase as well and was thinking with starting
with SQLAnywhere studio first.
Just looking for some comments, pointers, direction
etc.
