Combining text

I have a "U" and a "C". I would like to combine them so that they are one image (where the right part of the U and the left part of the C connect).

My problem is this. When I add a stroke, I would like the stroke to go around the U and C as a whole, not seperate. Can anyone assist me in doing that??

...get the U and C into position as you like it, open the pathfinder palette, with both letters selected choose the add to shape area button, first on the left, add the stroke and adjust to get a nice weight...

...the letters are still a typeface at this point if you need them as paths, select expand in the pathfinder palette...

...forgot to mention, have the U and the C as separate letters, not on the same typed line...
