I am trying to create a chart in excel with an x axis made up of user types and the y axis of numbers of users, with the last years figures broken down as four quarters in columns for each user type. I would like to be able to breakdown the user types in to existing users and new users over each quarter, and for this to show as just one column for each user type. So, for example, a user type "a" would have four columns, one for each quarter of the year. The bottom portion of each column showing existing users, and the top half showing new users. The total number of users in each quarter would then appear as a value above each column. What I am actually getting is two separete sets of four colums for each user, one for existing and one for new. Can anyone let me know if the is a way of creating a graph in this way? Thank you.

Hi,

In Excel, you can have chart types that are Stacked Columns or Clustered Columns, but not both.

There are some chart tricks, that one can use. Did you search this forum? This question has been addressed, within the last two months, I believe.

I have searched, but all I found were postings on stacked columns side by side, which isn't really what I want. But I'll have another search to see if i can find anything else.

If stacked columns side by side is not what you want, describe what it is that you want.

I think I am after a stacked and clustered column.I want to have five different types of users on the x axis, and the number of users on the y axis. Each user type on the x axis would then be clustered in 4 columns, one for each year quarter. And then each column stacked to show existing users at the bottom and new users at the top. The stacked columns I saw on links through the searches I found didn't have the columns clustered and stacked. It may be that what I am trying to do can't be done.

Domino3, if u play around with values on stacked cols side by side, u will get what you want. Look for Liengme & column chart with a difference on a search engine.

Not a complete idiot. Some parts are still missing.

Set up your source data like this...
[tt]
Qtr Typ New Old
q1
a 0 2
b 6 1

q2
a 6 1
b 9 8

q3
a 5 0
b 5 7

q4
a 5 2
b 4 5

[/tt]
in the chart, select a series and FORMAT - Options tab and set the Gap Width to 0.

Where would I find the option to change the gap width? I've tried the various options available, but can't find a width changer.

Select any series.

Format > selected Data series - Option Tab
