com port changing automatically

i am using windows 98 os.there is 2 com ports available in my system
(com1,com3).after i installed one application,com3 port changes automatically to com5.because of that the application is not working.i done add-new-hardware .it happens again and again.
how to solve.

go to your bios setup
change the com3 to com2 (2f8,irq3)
then while rebooting go to safe mode & remove the com3
reboot again
& it will detect com2 which will not change
dont keep the coms in auto
make it com1 (3f8,irq3) the first one & the other as i said above then try
