Hi all,

Are .Net and COM similar? Is .Net a newer COM? Will .Net eventully replace COM?

No COM and .net are not similar. COM is a software component while .net is a framework. Using .net you can develop the COM component. Anuj Kumar Mishra

Maybe the question should be "are the DCOM wire protocol and SOAP similar in purpose?"

.Net uses technologies like SOAP in place of DCOM to get interoperability and to get through firewalls.

.Net still uses DCOM for "internal" connections - between servers in the same farm and within the same intranet. SOAP is s l o w and B U L K Y.

SOAP is s l o w and B U L K Y.

What sort of performance figures have you seen with SOAP? I know that since it uses XML it's wordy as all heck. Do you suspect that's the cause of the speed problem?
