I have a problem... I just took over maintaing a couple of universes that somebody else developed before they left the company. The problem that I am having is that the column names for the tables in the universe are not showing up when I look at them in Designer. I am not sure if this is a setting in Supervisor or if there is something else I should be looking for. All the reports run fine against them, but it is entirely to difficult to work on maintenance issues with these universes. If anyone can help me out here, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

This fix might be all you need -

Click on View->Refresh Structure

This will re-read the data dictionary and update for any changes that have occurred in the DB and not yet drawn through into the Universe.

Another possibility is that you are running designer against a customised strategy file, this is effectively the sql query which interogates the database and pulls back columns and table names

Thank you... I already tried the refresh structure feature and that did not do the trick... I will look into the possibility of a customised strategy file.

thanks

Hi ,
first of all tell us what is the backend database. In case the DB is Oracle then read ahead. Check the Connection and check the username and db string.

Now I have also faced this problem when I am connecting throught a user having access to public synonym and not the direct table and also when Dlink are used in creation of synonym.

if this is the case then the only way to overcome this problem is writing you own strategy. This is because the default strategy checks for the user data dictionary tables

I had a similar problem but with DB2 and MS Sequel Server, and the solution was permission from the server side. We as BO users had "Select" rights, but no Structure viewing privileges. You might also want to check with the DBA as far as user permissions on the server.

The strategy file is strictly for the universe builder. No need to move it.

I still don't think this is necessary in this case. The problem is one of privileges.

Since the original poster has stopped participating in the thread, perhaps the problem was resolved. Steve Krandel
