color help

hey guys, im asking for your help for something that ive been having difficulty with for some time now - i cannot seem to change a color to another exact color that im looking for. ive tried everything from saturation to replace color to whatever. ive searched around here and the web and still cant seem to get a straight answer.

heres a good example, im trying to change the color of the wheels on my friends ferrari to the gold color thats on this bmw m3.

heres my attempt, cant seem to get the right color. im sure its something simple/stupid that im doing and any help is greatly appreciated.

One of the problems is the extreme black on the target. I did get a decent color by using a solid color adjustment layer with the blend mode set to overlay. A brighter 'gold' is needed because of the overlay mode. You'll have to experiment. I also added a curves layer to lighten the extreme blacks. This helped with the dark blacks, but the lighter colors will need to be pulled back so they don't oversaturate. Those two coupled with masks should get you close to what you want.

Blimey... I would think with all that dosh that he would be able to buy some gold wheels for his Ferrari! ;-)

As mentioned, due to the myriad of black - i would use a path to cutout the wheels. Then i would create another layer - convert path to a selection, fill with a gold, and set the layer to overlay

I had a go - and it worked well
