Cognos report takes too long to run.

Hello,
I am a new Cognos user - I created a report on Cognos that uses about 3 million rows of data - it runs on DB Server in about 3 minutes, but on Cognos it takes about 15 minutes or so. I have set (currently) --> Processing = Limited Local; Use Local Cache = Yes; Rollup Processing = Local.

Can you please help?

Have you checked the SQL being presented to the database? It's possible that filtering is being performed locally, rather than being part of the query.

Thanks ... I did check the SQL and found filter being part of the SQL . I 'generated' SQL and ran on DB Server - it runs fine.

You mention the rollup behavior. This is an action that is performed on the Cognos 8 server AFTER execution of the query. So, whereas the query may return the first results from the DB after minutes, this resultset may still be processed on the Cognos server to produce the resulting set for the report. Did you run the tabular query from within Report Studio to find it's performance?

Hi, tabular query time is about 4 minutes. So, it looks like local processing takes time. How can I optimize this?

Minimize the load on the server and/or beef up the server specs. If your report involves summary filters, then the Cognos server will have a lot of ordering/aggregation on its hands.
If this is a management report then you could think of scheduling the report.
In any case I would check with the server admin how big the load on the server is during the query execution..
